Very important Yukiko Okada video
Very important Yukiko Okada video
some days ago i was researching more videos to analyze and i found this really interesting piece of yukiko okada’s media!
before talking about it though, let me give you a little bit more context about yukiko herself, just so you can get to know her better:
debuting in 1984, yukko quickly became a beloved figure in the japanese pop scene. her first single, "first date," was written by mariya takeuchi (yes, our mariya!), who’s one of the biggest names in japanese music. yukko kept releasing hit after hit, and even won the grand prix best new artist award at the japan record awards with her third single, "-dreaming girl- koi, hajimemashite." she really was that girl!
sato kayo, known as yukiko okada, was born on august 22, 1967. she became a national sensation after winning star tanjo in 1983 — and she was only 15! after that, her debut in the entertainment world was basically inevitable.
one thing that caught my attention while learning more about her was the relationship she had with mariya takeuchi and momoko kikuchi.
momoko and yukko were actually really close friends, not just colleagues! in a july 1985 interview for monthly dolive, yukko talked about how much she liked kikuchi — they would hang out, talk about movies and food, and just relax whenever their busy schedules allowed it. she also mentioned kumi tanaka as a close friend too. it’s really sweet to think about them finding comfort in each other in such a demanding industry.
on the other hand, her relationship with mariya was a lot more professional, but still very supportive. mariya takeuchi played a huge part in yukko’s early career, writing "first date," and blending cute pop with sophisticated melodies that fit yukko so perfectly. while it wasn’t like a full-on mentorship, yukko clearly admired mariya a lot — she even covered some of mariya’s songs later! you can tell she really looked up to her.
yukko had this innocent but super impressive vibe. imagine being 15, surrounded by adults, thrown into a huge career… and still managing to stay so bright and sweet. her voice had this delicate but powerful quality, like she could reach right into your heart without even trying. she really was our little princess who cheered everyone up.
personally, i love the way yukiko sings. i become insane for soft but confident vocals, and she nails it — her delivery fits those vibrant 80s pop arrangements too well. her music structures are simple but super catchy; like in "first date," the repetitive choruses just stay in your head forever. (and honestly i don’t even mind, i want to listen to them on repeat!)
while her lyrics are usually pretty straightforward — probably because her agency wanted to keep her image pure and relatable — her songs still explore these really tender themes of first love and adventure, which suits her image as this charming, dream-like girl.
also, can we talk about the chord progression in "futari dake no ceremony"??? it’s so good it was later used in "never see me again" by quasi — and then kanye sampled it too (even though i don’t agree at all with how he handled it or talked about it...).
"futari dake no ceremony" is honestly one of my personal yukko favorites. every time i hear it, i feel like i’m falling in love all over again... its exactly the catch she wants to give. It’s excellent in many ways.
but okay, leaving yukko’s life context aside for a sec — let’s talk about that interesting, slightly eerie vibe the video i found gives off:
in the video, we see yukko swaying her shoulders and head while holding a mic, with a group of musicians behind her. she’s got a pinkish sweater tied around her hips, and even though her movements are repetitive, they’re still so charming. her voice floats over everything, giving off this aura that's hard to explain.
so about the video itself: i noticed a lot of people were confused about what performance it was, and why it felt that way. i got curious too, and after digging around, i found out there are two main recordings floating around (both seem filmed with a professional camera — which back then, were super expensive btw).
the first one is just 15 seconds long and is called "very important yukiko okada video"
this is actually a snippet from a longer 15-minute recording, though right now, the longest version i could find is about 8 minutes (https://youtu.be/pgN1AJOkvEE?si=CSYbHyZZXvV6KtyB).
in that 8-minute video, yukko covers three mariya takeuchi songs:
mersey beat de utawasete
futari wa steady
mou ichido (one more time)
(i would’ve loved to hear adult yukko cover "mou ichido and mersey beat de utawasete"... sigh.)
as for when and where this was filmed — honestly, info about yukko is pretty limited nowadays (and a lot of wikis are outdated), but thankfully i have a yukko bestie who knows everything about her lolol (creds to her for the date info!).
apparently, this was recorded at tobu zoo in saitama prefecture, around november 24–25, 1984.
tobu zoo was a popular event spot back then, so it makes sense they'd film an idol performance there. and it’s such a wonderful slice of 80s idol culture — capturing yukko’s sweet live energy and one of japan’s cultural landmarks at the same time.
the second piece of media i found about this performance is a 3-to-4-minute video posted by a yukko fan account on facebook
(https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1Y1dbYbQTy/?mibextid=wwXIfr).
this video feels like a second part of the 8-minute one. a notable moment here is her singing "sayonara natsuyasumi."
there’s not too much to say about it, except that the colors are more saturated (so you can see her outfit better!) and there’s this guy in full yellow clothes presenting her — kind of funny.
yukko moves a bit more here too, gesturing with her free hand while she sings, and you can see her smile really clearly because the video quality is slightly better.
i just... i love yukiko okada so much it hurts sometimes.
and i’m definitely gonna gush about her more in future posts hehe.
thanks if you read all of this! hope you’re now a tiny bit in love with yukko too!!
